UNION OF MYANMAR
A country in Southeast Asia , on the bay of Bengal;capital , Naypyidaw; offical language Burmese. Annexed by the British during the 19th century, the country was occupied by the Japanese from 1942 to 1945 and become an independent republic in 1948.In 1962, an army coup led by Ne Win overthrew the government and established an authoritatian state.
The National League for Democracy (NLD) won
the election held in May 1990, even thought its leader Aung San Suu Kyi was under house arrest; however, the military regime did not relinquish power.
Ne Win (Myanmar)
(1911-2002), Burmese general and socialist stateman;prime minister 1958-60; head of state 1962-74; president 1974-81. After a military coup in 1962, he established a military dictatorship and formed a one-party state.
